Personally, I think that the book is always better than the movie, assuming I actually read the book. A book that I believe could have serious potential as a movie is, Looking for Alaska by John Green. This is probably my favorite book of all time. That being said I think that although it would be an awesome book to make into a move, it would extremely hard to do. The book has an incredible storyline, which is very detailed and complex. The book also gives great detail about each character and their background and personality. I believe it would be very tough to replicate the complexity of the plot within the normal time conventions of a movie. Another huge part of making this book into a movie would be the actors who would portray the characters from the book. Books allow readers to imagine the characters how they want to see them, by having a major studio cast the actors, people who read the book will be disappointed when they see that the characters that they had imagined are not at all what they see in the movie. In addition movies also tend to leave out tons of plot information from the book.
