Project 1

My pop culture icon is Post Malone. Last year, if you were to ask most Americans who Austin Post is, they would have no clue. Better known as “Post Malone,” rapper, Austin Post has made a household name for himself over the past year. Post Malone was born in Syracuse, New York on July 4, 1995, but moved to Arlington, Texas at a young age and spent most of his life there. The twenty-one-year-old Texan found his musical roots from playing the popular video game Guitar Hero. In an interview with Mass Appeal on YouTube. Post says that he grew up playing the game, which galvanized him to want to play the guitar. He also stated that he grew up listening to all kinds of music, especially rock and country. Austin started writing music in high school, where he discovered his talent for rap and hip hop music. For the most part, Austin Post has never been a mainstream artist, until early 2016 when he released his hit song “White Iverson.” Since then, the song has been flooding radio stations and memorizing people with its’ hypnotizing beat and catchy hook. In the meantime, he has done a world tour with singer, Justin Bieber, and released his debut studio album, "Stoney," which is the best album that I have ever heard. For a young white rapper, Post Malone’s audience is considerably large. His main audiences are teens and people in their early twenties. His songs usually are more rhythmic and less rap, but still very explicit and generally geared towards a younger audience. I also believe that most of his songs have a second audience. That second audience is himself. Often in his songs, his lyrics seem to reflect his own thoughts and feelings toward things in his life. It is accurate to say that Post Malone’s songs describe him as a person, and give insight into the story of his life.

Project One Reflection

My project one topic was rapper, Post Malone. I chose to analyze an interview he did with Hot Ones, about a song of his called,"White Iverson," and another interview he did with Mass Appeal. It took me a little while to choose what I really wanted to write about. I finally chose Post Malone because I really enjoy his music and his personalty. I decided to analyze the artifacts that I did because I thought the mode of a YouTube video was interesting, rather than just analyzing his songs. Also, I thought that the interviews gave more of a sense of a personal connection, and really utilized pathos quite effectively. This project was relatively fun to write, as we got to pick our own topic. I enjoyed researching my favorite rapper and then using the rhetorical strategies that I learned in class to further analyze some of his compositions. An obstacle I encountered while composing this project was writing the whole thing in third person. It was hard to refrain from giving my personal opinion on the subject, because I was writing about something that I really enjoyed. The hardest part of the writing process for me was deciding on which compositions to use in my essay.
