For my research assessment, I originally followed Roald Bahr, a sports medicine professor, on twitter with the intentions of analyzing some of his research to help me in research of my own. Unfortunately, after scrolling through a sufficient amount of Bahr's twitter, I found no research or articles from him that I could use. So for this journal I will be analyzing Albert C. Hergenroeder's article Prevention of Sports Injuries. Albert begins his article by giving the reader a sense of just how many sports injuries occur among adolescents in the United States each year. He states that a sports injury is defined as an injury that causes time off from sports participation. Albert then says that one reason for the large number of sports injuries each year is partly caused by pediatricians. He claims that pediatricians need to have a better ability to diagnose, manage and treat sports injuries more efficiently. This claim provided me with a different outlook on the cause of sports injuries. Albert also claims that the number of annual sports injuries has decreased largely because of improved sports environments. He states that because things such as preseason examinations and improved playing surfaces the amount of injuries in sports has been able to significantly decrease. I learned that treating a sports injury is just as, if not, more important than preventing one. Albert goes on to talk about how many sports injuries are caused due to a lack of proper recovery from a previous injury. Improper rehabilitation from an injury can cause a multitude of future problems for an athlete. Finally Albert talks about how the mentality of modern sports has increased injuries. So many injuries are caused by athletes pushing themselves too hard or trying to push their physical limits. He says that sports have went from being played for fun and pleasure rather than the hard work and extremely strenuous activities that they are now.
